John Profumo talks with a member of the Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC) while holding a frying pan. This photograph was probably taken on an official visit to the WRAC Training Centre at Lingfield in Surrey in April 1962.
John Profumo (1915-2006) became Secretary of State for War in July 1960. The following year he became embroiled in the affair that ended his political career in 1963. Profumo was a veteran of World War Two (1939-1945), commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps in 1939, he served in North Africa and Normandy.
