'Behind the Orange River intrenchments [sic] holding back the bravely advancing Boers', 1900 (c)

Stereoscopic photograph, Boer War (1899-1902) 1900 (c).

British infantry man the trenches in South Africa. They wear khaki service drill. This had been introduced in India from 1885 and for all foreign service outside Europe from 1896. When the Boer War ended in 1902 khaki drill was introduced for home service as well, finally relegating the traditional red coat to a ceremonial role.

From a box of 89 stereoscopic cards entitled, 'South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1', published by Underwood and Underwood and produced by Works and Sun Sculpture Studios, 1900 (c).
