The strategically important Pescara-Termoli road junction after attempts by the Germans to retake it, October 1943
Lantern slide, World War Two, Italy (1943-1945), 1943.
This photograph was taken during the 78th Division's assault on the Adriatic section of the German Volturno Line. Despite fierce enemy counter-attacks, the division held out until re-inforced by British and Canadian armoured units. By 6 October 1944, the Allies were back on the attack and the Germans began falling back to their defences on the River Trigno.
From a collection of British official war photographs relating to the 78th Division.
