The street outside the Anzac hostel, Cairo, Egypt 1916

Photograph, World War One, Middle East (1914-1918), Egypt, 1916

Anzac was a common abbreviation of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during World War One. The Anzac hostel in Cairo was established in May 1916 and remained open until 1919. British and Anzac soldiers staying there could get good food and a comfortable bed. The hostel could accommodate 300-400 men a night.

From a collection of photographs taken by Corporal Joseph Egerton, Shropshire Yeomanry in Sinai and Palestine.
