A dining room inside the Anzac hostel, Cairo, Egypt, 1916

Photograph, World War One, Middle East (1914-1918), Egypt, 1916.

Anzac was a common abbreviation of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during World War One (1914-1918).

The Anzac hostel in Cairo was established in May 1916 and remained open until 1919. British and Anzac soldiers staying there could get good food and a comfortable bed. The hostel could accommodate 300-400 men a night.

From a collection of photographs taken by Corporal Joseph Egerton, Shropshire Yeomanry in Sinai and Palestine.
