An Egyptian Camel Transport Corps convoy heading to Bahariya Oasis, 1916

Photograph, World War One, Middle East (1914-1918), Libya, 1916.

Image caption states: 'Camel convoy passing No 2 Block House en route from Shusha to Baharia oasis - Libyan desert.'

The Camel Transport Corps was formed at the beginning of World War One (1914-1918) with Egyptian camel drivers hired and organised to support and supply British and Imperial troops operating in the Middle East. A War Department inspection in January 1916 puts the strength of the Corps at around 10,000 camels, 52 officers and 1,400 other ranks.

From a collection of photographs taken by Corporal Joseph Egerton, Shropshire Yeomanry in Sinai and Palestine.
