Colonel Dhaunkal Singh, 1865 (c)

Watercolour by a Company artist, Punjab, 1865 (c).

Around 1805, Dhaunkal Singh (d.1844) deserted from the Bengal Army and joined the Sikh Army. He served Ranjit Singh with distinction and was given command of a regiment largely made up of other soldiers who had deserted from East India Company service. He is the only Sikh shown in this volume wearing European-style clothes and seated on a European-style chair.
