Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1878.

Rattray's Sikhs formed part of 4th Brigade, Peshawar Valley Field Force, and until the evacuation of Kabul in August 1880 served with the armies operating in Northern Afghanistan. During the earlier part of the initial campaign the regiment held Jamrud, keeping open the communications with Ali Masjid, and for some weeks performing escort and convoy duties, being frequently engaged in skirmishes with the enemy.
