Unveiling of a memorial to members of the Royal Munster Fusiliers killed on active service in South Africa, 1906

The memorial was unveiled on 26 September 1906 by Lord Dunraven (left) and Lord Kenmare (right). The Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war where the commemoration on war memorials of officers and ordinary soldiers killed became widespread. Regiments were linked to specific counties and local people took pride in their soldiers. Volunteer soldiers had particularly strong ties with the locations where they usually lived and worked.
