'First Women to win GM', 2 October 1940

Photograph, World War Two, Home Front (1939-1945) 1940.

Mrs Bessie Jane Hepburn, an ambulance attendant of Aldeburgh, Suffolk, was awarded the George Medal (GM) for bravery in rescuing a man badly injured in an explosion on 8 July 1940.

Like the George Cross, the George Medal was instituted by King George VI in 1940 for acts of bravery by civilians and service personnel for heroism not in the face of the enemy.
