'Encampment of King Henry at Marquison, July MDXLIV', French War, 1544
Engraving by James Basire after S H Grimm, published by The Society of Antiquaries, April 1788.
Wives considered themselves to be superior in status to mistresses and sweethearts. This could often lead to fights between the women, most often concerning entitlement to seating on the baggage wagons. Those who didn't get a seat were expected to walk and to carry camp baggage (including pots, kettles, pans and items of clothing.) Once a camp was established the camp followers were expected to perform many duties.
