Tania Szabo wearing her mother's, George Cross and other medals, 1946 (c)

Tania Szabo (b.1942) was the only daughter of Special Operations Executive (SOE) heroine, Violette Szabo (1921-1945).

Violette undertook two SOE missions to France and was awarded a posthumous George Cross in 1946 for her sustained bravery. She was captured on 10 June 1944 during her second mission where she assisted the resistance in sabotaging German lines of communication. She was executed at Ravensbruck concentration camp in February 1945.

Aged just four, Tania Szabo received the George Cross on behalf of her mother from King George VI at Buckingham Palace on 17 December 1946. For the ceremony she wore a dress that her mother had bought for her in Paris during her first mission.
