Girl Guides, Quetta, 1938

Photograph, India, 1938.

The Indian Girl Guides Association were established in 1911, one year after Agnes Baden-Powell (sister of the founder of modern scouting Lieutenant-General Robert Baden-Powell) had established the organisation in Britain. Like their male counterparts, the Indian Guides learnt valuable skills such as first aid and signalling.

From a group of 720 photographs collected by Colonel F T Birdwood OBE, Indian Army, 1916-45.
