The Girl Guides Association were established in 1910 by Agnes Baden-Powell, sister of the founder of modern scouting Lieutenant-General Robert Baden-Powell. Legend has it that Baden-Powell named the new organisation the Girl Guides after the Indian Army's famous Corps of Guides a regiment he had served alongside when stationed on the subcontinent.
