Members of the West Indies Auxiliary Territorial Service, 1943 (c)
Photograph, World War Two, 1943 (c).
Although by 1943 the barrier of racial prejudice which had prevented black Caribbean women from joining Britain's uniformed services had been overcome, a class barrier still remained. The War Office insisted that only women from the educated middle class were to be allowed to enlist. This ensured that a substantial proportion of the Caribbean recruits to these services would be white.
