A motorcycle despatch rider, with bandaged head, stands by his Douglas motorbike and points towards a burning village. By 1915 the number of new recruits was falling. Stories of the horrors soldiers were facing discouraged men from enlisting. Recruiters and propagandists therefore made a last effort to avoid instituting conscription.
