General Service Medal 1962-2007, awarded to Trooper Fred Hamer, Parachute Regiment and 22nd Special Air Service
Circular silver medal with the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscription, 'Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina F.D.', on the obverse. On the reverse, the inscription, 'For Campaign Service'. The rim is impressed with the recipient's name and service number. The medal ribbon is purple with green edges.
Hamer was called up for National Service in 1951; he joined the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, transferred to the Parachute Regiment and served with the Middle East Land Forces during 1952-1953. On discharge from National Service Hamer joined the Parachute Regiment's Territorial battalion, later re-enlisting as a Regular. He served in Cyprus and the Far East, was wounded during a Special Air Service attack on Jebel Akhdar in January 1959, and discharged medically unfit in 1965.
The General Service Medal 1962, encompassed all three services and was introduced in 1964. It rewarded service in campaigns from 1962 onwards. The first clasp to be attached to the ribbon was for Borneo. Hamer's medal includes the latter, alongside the clasp for 'Radfan'.
