Framed medal group of Lieutenant John Arthur Riccomini MBE MC, Royal Army Service Corps and the Special Air Service
Riccomini was awarded these medals during his service with the Special Air Service (SAS) during the Second World War (1939-1945).
Riccomini took part in two operations with the SAS - Operation Galia in 1944 and Operation Tombola in 1945, both in northern Italy. During an assault on German military headquarters on Operation Tombola, Riccomini led part of a three pronged attack, his target being a German billet at Villa Rossi. Before his team reached it, an attack on one of the other targets began, which alerted the German defences. Riccomini's team rushed into the villa and amidst fierce fighting, Riccomini sustained a fatal head wound.
The frame includes his Order of the British Empire MBE Military type, George VI Military Cross, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, 1939-45 War Medal, two Bath-Star brass rank pips, Africa Star medal ribbon, a Royal Army Service Corps sweetheart brooch and printed recommendations for his MBE and for the Military Cross.
