Beldum served with the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry. Like the rest of the Territorial Force, the Yeomanry were not obliged to serve overseas, but when asked after the outbreak of war, the vast majority agreed to do so. On mobilisation in August 1914, the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry became part of the Welsh Border Mounted Brigade.
