Major William Stewart on 'Blackie', 1901 (c)

A Welshman, Stewart was gazetted to the Welsh Regiment in 1895, becoming a lieutenant in 1898 and captain in 1902. He served throughout the Boer War with the 1st Mounted Infantry, most notable in command of Maxim guns. Amongst other places he was present at the Relief of Kimberley, and the advances on Johannesburg, Middleburg and Komati Poort. Later he was ADC to General Sir E A H Alderson.

Major Stewart was mentioned in despatches three times, and was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with six clasps and the King's South Africa Medal with two clasps. He was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. Stewart left the Army in 1906 and joined the Pembrokshire Yeomanry. They mobilized for the First World War but he was invalided out due to a fractured skull in 1916. He died in 1964.
