Flintlock horse pistol with English 'dog-catch' lock, 1645 (c)

During the Civil Wars of Britain (1639-1651) a cavalryman would carry his pistols in holsters in front of his saddle. This pistol has an 'English' lock, fitted with a 'dog-catch' to allow the weapon to be carried safely until it is ready to fire. It would have been used at close range because it was very inaccurate. In emergencies, it could be held by the barrel and used as a short club.
