Rucksack used by a member of 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, in the Falkland Islands, 1982

Rucksacks enable soldiers to carry the equipment and food they need. In the Falklands, a lack of vehicles forced soldiers to walk long distances with their packs of equipment and supplies weighing up to 54 kg (119 lb).
