Housewife made of white canvas, 1953

During the years of National Service (1947-1963) many conscripts were introduced to sewing when issued with their 'housewife' which contained needles, thread and spare buttons. By 1951 around 50 per cent of the Army's strength consisted of National Servicemen. They came from all walks of life and from all social backgrounds.
