Hot weather shako cover worn by Lieutenant-Colonel John Lewes, 2nd West India Regiment, 1855-1861

British troops serving in tropical regions were issued with white cloth covers for their shakos as a means of warding off sun stroke. Between 1855 and 1861 Lewes' regiment served in Gambia, British Guiana (now Guyana) and Sierra Leone.
