Roorkhee camp chair, used by Captain H K Clough, King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment), Boer War, 1902 (c)

Stained oak frame with four lathe turned legs ending a knobbed feet, and joined by wooden struts; leather straps are fixed to the tops on the legs and form arm rests; the joints pull apart and each piece is marked with a numeral; the seat is of pale green canvas and fixes to the frame by two bars which pass through the top and bottom; the back is canvas and fixed to the frame with loops, it does not fix into any position.

The Roorkhee chair is a practical piece of robust camp furniture designed by and for the use of British service personnel for use in rugged terrain in Africa and India. Roorkhee, where the chair is believed to have originated, was a military cantonment and headquarters of the Bengal Sappers. It is now a city in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
