Artillery set box for toy tank, field gun and limber, 1931 (c)-1939 (c)
This set contains a turnover tank, field gun and two-wheeled cart, called a limber. The box shows the artillery in imaginary battlefield scenes.
Louis Marx and Company was set up in New York City in 1919 and started production in the United Kingdom in 1931, with its first factory at Dudley. The company's UK arm was taken over by Dunbee Cobex in 1967, but continued to make toys under the Louis Marx and Company name until 1976.
Marx toys were inexpensive and had uncomplicated designs with sturdy, durable construction. The low-cost toys were marketed to a wide audience, and could be purchased even by families experiencing financial hardship in the 1930s.
