Service dress tunic worn by Colonel C P Rooke, DSO, 11th (Service) Battalion The Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 1915 (c)

Officers' ranks were indicated by braid, crowns and pips on cuff flaps, as shown here. This attracted sniper-fire so in 1915 some began wearing insignia on shoulder epaulettes. Initially frowned upon, it was officially adopted in 1917.
