Socket bayonet for Land Pattern musket, 1770 (c)

Made by Woolley of Birmingham, this bayonet fitted around the musket barrel, allowing the soldier to shoot. Bayonets were for close combat. Private Isaac Midgely recalled: 'After the battle [of Culloden in 1746] there was not a bayonet…neither bloody or bent.'
