Mauser KAR98 7.92 mm bolt action rifle, 1940

This was the German Army's main rifle during the war. Adopted in 1935, it had an effective firing range of around 550 yards (500 metres) and used five-round clips of ammuniton. Although it was a reliable and sturdy rifle, its low rate of fire became more apparent as American and Soviet troops began to use more semi-automatic weapons. The KAR98 was therefore supplemented with a range of new semi-automatic rifles.
