'Gardner's Battery, Gibraltar', 1866 (c)
Photograph in decorative mount, 1866 (c).
Gardiner's Battery covering the western approaches to Gibraltar, with large guns on traversing carriages and several piles of solid shot. The guns include 68 pounder guns and 7-inch Armstrong breech loading guns. Soldiers can be seen by the guns and a great many ships are anchored in the background. Gardiner's battery was named after the governor of Gibraltar from 1848-1855, Sir Robert William Gardiner (1781-1864).
From an album of 62 photographs compiled by Lieutenant (later Lieutenant-Colonel) Henry Rowland Spencer Chatfield, 86th (Royal County Down) Regiment of Foot.
