'New Cavalry Barracks, Colchester', 1864

Etching published by Rock and Company, London, '1 May 1864'.

Cavalry drilling before rows of barracks.

Built in 1862, these were the first permanent barracks constructed at the Colchester garrison. They replaced wooden huts and tents. A Royal Commission in 1857 had examined the problems of sanitation, sickness and mortality in barracks and concluded that new brick-built buildings with heating, ventilation and sanitation were required.
