'Hiddle & Peter Gregory', Lieutenant James Maxwell Hiddlestone and 2nd Lieutenant Peter Gregory, 1942
Lieutenant James Maxwell Hiddlestone (151671) and 2nd Lieutenant Peter Gregory, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), with binoculars, in the desert.
Hiddlestone was later killed in Libya in June 1942, during fighting on the Gazala Line. Hiddlestone, Jimmy Sale and Peter Gregory were commanding three tanks knocked out while escorting an ammunition convoy in the chaotic battle in 'The Cauldron'. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records Lieutenant James Maxwell Hiddlestone as dying between 6 and 7 June 1942. His name is commemorated at the Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya. Peter Gregory was wounded in the same action and have to have a leg amputated.
