Exemptions from Ballot and service in the Regular Militia, 1800 (c)

Printed document, 1800 (c).

The Militia was recruited through a form of conscription with each parish being responsible for supplying a set number of men. Local men were balloted for a five-year term of duty and those chosen could either serve, obtain an exemption or pay for a substitute. Compulsory service was abandoned by 1830.

Exemptions from service, listed in this document, include clergymen, regular service personnel, teachers, constables, 'Medical Men' and 'Poor men who have more than one Child born in Wedlock'.
