'Attaque du port de Chatham', 1667

Line engraving by Francois Dequevauviller after Nicola Ozanne, 1770.

During the Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667) soldiers served on ships and garrisoned coastal forts. Those at Sheerness Fort and Upnor Castle could not stop the Dutch burning Chatham dockyard after their fleet entered the Medway. This caused panic in London, where a further attack was expected. However, the Dutch did not follow up their success and peace was concluded soon after.
