Soldiers from 4th General Support Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps preparing a Green Goddess fire engine at Slade Park Barracks, Oxford, 2002

Digital photograph by Corporal Dave Liddle, Royal Logistic Corps, 14 November 2002.

During the 2002-2003 firefighters' strike, the Army provided emergency cover using Bedford 'Green Goddess' engines, originally produced in the 1950s for use in case of a nuclear attack on Britain. It did this while simultaneously preparing to deploy over 30,000 soldiers to the Middle East.

From one of 96 CDs of photographs of the British Army on active service, training or engaged in sports, 2001-2005.
