Iserlohn/ Hemer Army Families Official Guide. Booklet, 1982

Iserlohn and Hemer were garrison areas occupied by the British Army of the Rhine during the Cold War. Spread across both towns, in barracks and in married quarters, the units stationed in the garrison were part of the UK's 3rd Division.

The Canadians had maintained the 4 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group (known from 1968 as the 4th Canadian Mechanised Brigade Group), which was headquartered in Soest, but also had locations at Hemer, Werl and Iserlohn - some 6,700 troops by the mid-1960s.

The British replaced the Canadians in the 1970s, and remained there until the garrison was closed in 1994 as part of the cuts resulting from the 'Options for Change' defence review in the aftermath of victory in the Cold War.
