Overboots, worn by Major C R G Watt, Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales's Own), 1991 (c)
These overboots were worn over normal combat boots as part of a Mark IV Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare suit, to protect against chemical warfare attacks. These were worn by Robin Watt during the Gulf War (1990-1991). Watt was a soldier and artist attached to the headquarters of 7th Armoured Brigade in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
The boots and suit could be worn for days and were comfortable enough to fight in. During the war British soldiers repeatedly had to don their NBC suits following alarm warnings of Iraqi chemical attacks.
