Deodar wood gate fragment, 1842

During Ghazni's occupation in the 1st Afghan War (1838-1842), the gates of the tomb of Mahmud of Ghazni were identified as the historic Gates of Somnath, a Hindu temple in India, which Mahmud had plundered in 1025. In 1842 the new Governor-General of India, Lord Ellenborough, solemnly handed the gates back to the 'Princes and Chiefs of Sirhind, of Rajwarra, of Malwa and Guzerat', but on later examination the gates turned out to have been made in Ghazni.
