Military Medal awarded to Private M Peterson, Union Defence Force, South African Medical Corps, 1945

Private Petersen was a black African soldier who served in the South African Medical Corps, attached to the First City and Cape Town Highlanders, 6th South African Division during World War Two (1939-1945). He was awarded the Military Medal for 'outstanding bravery' while attached as a stretcher bearer to one of the two assaulting companies in the attack on Monte Sole in Italy on 15 April 1945.
