The West African Frontier Force (WAFF) was formed in 1900 to administer the British colonial forces of Nigeria, the Gold Coast (Ghana), Sierra Leone and Gambia.

The Nigeria Regiment was one of its main components, and went on to serve in both world wars, assisting in the capture of German colonies in east and west Africa in 1914-18, and fighting the Japanese in Burma in 1942-45.

The WAFF was finally disbanded in 1960 as the British colonies in the region moved towards independence. But its units formed the basis of the new national armies of their respective states.

The Nigeria Regiment's parade uniform comprised khaki drill with red fezes, scarlet-zouave style jackets edged in yellow and red cummerbunds.
