East and West Africa Medal 1887-1900, with clasp, 'Sierra Leone 1898-99', awarded to Private D Johnson, 1st West India Regiment
Circular, silver campaign medal with, on the obverse, a portrait of Queen Victoria, with the inscription, 'Victoria Regina'. On the reverse, designed by Sir Edward Poynter, British infantry fighting African warriors in a forest. The medal is suspended from a yellow ribbon with black edges and two narrow, vertical black stripes, with silver clasp, 'Sierra Leone 1898-99'.
This medal was established in 1892 and awarded for general service in a number of small campaigns and expeditions in East and West Africa. Johnson's unit served in Sierra Leone in 1897-1898.
