Sir George Nugent was commissioned in 1773 and saw service in the American War of Independence and the Wars of the French Revolution. He was commander of the Northern Distinct in Ireland during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and was responsible for putting down the uprisings in counties Antrim and Down. He later held a number of other political and military positions, including commander in Chief in India 1811-1813, and was made a field marshal a few years before his death in 1849.
