Photograph compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, 1941 (c).
Derek French perches on a motorcycle bearing the rhinoceros insignia of the 1st Armoured Division. In October 1940, 2nd Armoured Division, excepting 22nd Armoured Brigade, was ordered to the Middle East. 22nd Armoured Brigade, of which the Sharpshooters were part, subsequently joined 1st Armoured Division. The motorbike's headlight is fitted with a blackout cover to reduce the chance of the vehicle being seen from the air at night.
In October 1940, the 3rd and 4th Sharpshooters Regiments moved to the Dorking area, with the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) billeted in Cherfold, Chiddingfold and surrounding villages. The Sharpshooters were temporarily deployed to various training areas during this period. After gunnery training in South Wales in February 1941 the unit returned to southern England to train on the South Downs between Worthing and Arundel. In May 1941 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) moved to Westbury in Wiltshire, prior to deployment to North Africa.
