Indian Mutiny Medal, with a clasp for 'Central India', awarded to Captain John Grant Malcolmson VC, 3rd Regiment of Bombay Light Cavalry
Silver, circular campaign medal with, on the obverse, a portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a diadem, with the inscription, 'Victoria Regina'. On the reverse is a robed figure of Britannia, wearing a helmet, holding a wreath and shield with a lion by her side. Above is the word 'India', while below are the dates, '1857-1858'. The medal is suspended on a red and white striped ribbon with a clasp bearing the battle honour, 'Central India'. The obverse of this medal was designed by William Wyon, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint from 1828, and the reverse by his son Leonard Charles Wyon who also worked at the Royal Mint.
John Grant Malcolmson (1835-1902) was commissioned into the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry on 28 August 1855. He served with them during the Persian War of 1856-57 and was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for his actions at the Battle of Khoosh-ab in 1857. He was also present at the capture of Reshire and surrender of Bushire.
He later served during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-59, most notably at the Siege of Ratghur and the fall of Kalpi earning him the clasp for 'Central India' to his Mutiny Medal.
