Dog collar for Major-General Reginald William Sartorius's dog 'Bell'
Sartorius was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry at Abogoo on 17 January 1874, during the 2nd Ashanti War (1873-1874), when he rescued a wounded comrade under heavy fire. He was twice mentioned in Despatches during the same campaign. Throughout the Ashanti War Sartorius was accompanied by his dog 'Bell', both becoming national heroes. His brother, Major-General Euston Henry Sartorius, also won the Victoria Cross in Afghanistan in 1879. The gilt metal collar was presented to Reginald Sartorius for 'Bell' by the 'Ladies of Lancashire'.
