Colonel Thomas Cadell VC, CB, 1907

Photograph by the studio of Fradelle and Young, 283 Regent Street, London.

Cadell (1835-1919) won the Victoria Cross (VC) on 12 June 1857 while serving as a lieutenant with the 2nd Bengal Fusiliers. During the Siege of Delhi he rescued a wounded bugler while under severe fire. Later on the same day, when the fusiliers were retiring, he went back of his own accord and, accompanied by three men, brought in a severely wounded man under heavy fire from the advancing enemy. He later achieved the rank of colonel and served as Chief Commissioner of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between 1878 and 1892. Cadell was also made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB).
