Medal commemorating the victories of Queen Anne over King Louis XIV, 1706

The obverse of this silver medal shows Queen Anne depicted as Minerva overthrowing Louis XIV who is clad as Mars. Both are clad in classical dress and armour. The reverse shows soldiers attacking a tower, one of whom is lighting a fire at the foot of the building. The inscription refers to a biblical episode in Judges 9, 50-55 when a woman (here allegorically representing Anne) dropped a millstone from the tower of Thebez onto the head of Abimelech (here representing Louis), who then had his servant kill him to avoid the shame of having been defeated by a woman.
