Queen Victoria and Prince Albert meeting Crimean veterans, 1855 (c)

From 'War in the Crimea' an album of 61 coloured lithographs, published by Lemercier et Cie, Paris 1856 (c).

Queen Victoria took a keen personal interest in the welfare of her soldiers and at the conclusion of the Crimean War (1854-1856) she invited many veterans to Windsor Castle. She also instituted the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry.
