The Duchess of Kent visits the Indian Comforts Fund, 11 June 1944
Photograph, World War Two, Home Front (1939-1945), 1944.
Founded by Viscountess Chelmsford in December 1939, the Indian Comforts Fund was a charity based at India House in Aldwych. Run by British and Indian women, it provided clothing and food to Indian sailors and soldiers stationed in Britain. The fund also helped find accommodation for Indian lascars (merchant sailors) stranded in British ports. It was also responsible for all Asian prisoners of war (POWs) in Europe. The fund supplied some 1.6 million parcels for Indian POWs between 1939 and 1945.
