King Thibaw being escorted to captivity by British soldiers, Burma, 1885

Watercolour on Oriental paper, by a Burmese artist, 1885.

Following the 3rd Burma War (1885-1887) King Thibaw and his family were exiled to Ratnagiri near Bombay (Mumbai) in 1885. He memorably described those who had deposed him and taken his kingdom as the 'bull-faced, earth-swallowing English'.
